The Visibility Gap
In v0.15.0, we shipped parallel subagents — your lead agent can delegate to specialists that run in the background. It works. But once the subagent tree scrolled past, you were left staring at a counter:
⟳ 2 agents runningTwo agents running. Doing what? How long? How much are they costing? No idea. You had to run /tasks to find out. That's not good enough when three agents are burning through tokens in parallel.
The Toast Zone
v0.15.3 introduces the Agent Status Toast — a persistent notification area that shows exactly what each agent is doing, in real time:
⠸ explore: Analyze the project structure… — 30s · 6 tools · 92.1K tokens · $0.03
⠸ review: Conduct a thorough code review… — 22s · 3 tools · 43.1K tokens · $0.01Each row shows:
- Spinner — animated while the agent is working
- Name — which agent type (explore, review, code-reviewer, etc.)
- Description — what it was asked to do (truncated to fit)
- Elapsed time — live counter, updating every second
- Tool calls — how many Read/Grep/Bash calls the agent has made
- Tokens — cumulative input + output tokens consumed
- Cost — estimated USD cost based on the model's pricing
When an agent finishes, the row transitions to a completion state:
✓ explore: Found 12 API endpoints — 45s · 10 tools · 164.2K tokens · $0.05
✓ review: 3 issues found, 2 critical — 3m 53s · 43 tools · 977.0K tokens · $0.27Completed rows persist for 10 seconds (15 for failures) so you have time to notice them, then auto-dismiss. The toast zone collapses to zero height when no agents are active — no wasted screen space.
Status Bar Totals
The status bar now shows accumulated subagent usage for the entire session:
● Normal | 17% · 22K/128K | $0.04 + sub:135K tokens · $0.04 | 62.8 MB | 48s/1m 18sThe + sub: section shows total tokens and cost across all subagents — past and present. This persists even after individual toast rows dismiss. You always know how much your agents have spent.
The additive format ($0.04 + sub:$0.04) makes it clear these are separate costs, not nested. The main session cost is what the lead agent spent; the subagent cost is what the delegates spent.
Theme-Aware Colors
The subagent stats in the status bar use your selected theme's accent color. Whether you're using Classic (cyan), Brand (blue), Forest (green), or any other theme — the subagent display matches.
/theme teal # Subagent stats render in teal
/theme amber # Subagent stats render in amberNo hardcoded colors. It just fits.
The Full Picture
Here's what v0.15.0 through v0.15.3 built together — the complete parallel agent experience:
- v0.15.0 — Parallel subagent architecture: spawn, background, continue, isolate
- v0.15.1 — Background-by-default, error classification, provider sync
- v0.15.2 — 1Hz render throttle, running-agent indicator, push-based results
- v0.15.3 — Per-agent toast, cost tracking, status bar totals
You can now spawn multiple agents, watch them work in real time, and see what each one costs. The terminal stays responsive, the information stays visible, and you stay in control.
